Economics

HOD's Message

Learning economics helps to understand human behaviour and to make better choices in times of scarcity leading to better economic well-being. Economics provides a methodology for understanding complex economic issues and a systematic framework for analysing those issues. The undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered in Loyola College covers a wide spectrum of these economic issues from theory of choices, public policy, monetary policy and macro-economic theories to environmental economics, international trade and financial markets. The students are thus equipped with skills that are crucial for job openings. The demand for the UG and PG courses in Economics at Loyola College is ever on an increase. Students with diverse career dreams aspire to be part of the department. The department is able to attract aspirants of Civil Services, Chartered Accountancy and Financial & Economic Analysis at large.

The Department of Economics has always used the changing scenario of higher education at the national/regional levels and within Loyola with the right attitude. The status of autonomy and academic restructuring has always been used as an opportunity to raise the benchmark of the department in terms of upgraded curriculum and evaluation methods. For every cycle of academic restructuring the department meticulously upgrades the syllabus to match the changing needs of the job market. The outcome of such efforts are witnessed through the achievements of the alumni of the department.

For holistic development of the students, the department offers a wide platform under the banner of Loyola Economics Association for Development (LEAD). The association organises series of events including state/national/international symposium, ‘Equilibrium' – the Department Festival and Thoudam David Endowment Lecture. The association also provides opportunity for its pupils to showcase their extra-curricular and co-curricular talents.

The department strives good in research as well with M.Phil and doctoral programmes attracting research aspirants across the world.
