Advanced Zoology & Biotechnology

The Department of Natural Sciences was started in 1948. A full-fledged Department of Zoology was started in 1957 offering B.Sc Zoology. In spite of being an Undergraduate department, it was recognized officially as a Centre for Research by the University of Madras in 1965.

In 1985 the department was upgraded into a Post-Graduate Department and started offering M.Sc Zoology with emphasis on Environmental Biology. A Post-Graduate Diploma course on Medical Lab Technology was introduced in 1988. Full-time M.Phil course was started in 1988. In 2003, the department started M.Sc. in Medical Lab Technology and in 2004 M.Sc in Biomedical Instrumentation Science. In the academic year 2005-06, the University of Madras granted affiliation to B.Sc Advanced Zoology and Biotechnology. This curriculum replaced B.Sc Zoology.

STRENGTHS OF THE DEPARTMENT
The first scientific publication on "Notes on Snakes" was published by Herpetologist Fr. Charles Leigh in 1926.
Dr. T. N. Ananthakrishnan and Dr. P. Venkatesan are the first to receive Doctor of Science (D. Sc) in 1964 and 2009 respectively.
Dr. T. N. Ananthakrishnan became Director, Zoological Survey of India in 1977.
Dr. T. N. Ananthakrishnan is the first recipient of J. C. Bose Memorial Award and Dr. K. V. Mehta Award in 1998 and 2000 respectively.
It is the only department to have produced 224 Ph.Ds as on December 2019.
It is the first to offer M.Sc in Medical Laboratory Technology in an Arts and Science college.
It is the first to offer M.Sc in Biomedical Instrumentation science under the innovative courses scheme of UGC in an Arts and Science college.
Fr. Charles Leigh Zoology museum houses rare and precious specimen collection.
The total grant received through Research Projects between 2014-19 is Rs 1,09,76,058/-
